Red Fox For Sale

Pet Red Fox

Red Foxes are known for their long rusty red bodies, black legs, and fluffy tails known as “brushes”. They have black pointed ears, canine teeth, and a white underbelly all the way up to their chins. Newly born Red Foxes are born gray, but grow their red coats within a month. Newborn foxes are called “kits”. The male Red Fox is called a “dog” and a female, a “vixen”. Both are around the same size, 10-12 pounds and measures 55-74” long. Males are typically just slightly larger, longer, and have longer snouts as well. Red Foxes reach maturity around 8 months of age and live only to be 2-4 years old. Being kept captive extends their life by many years, typically 10-12 years.

At first sight, Red Foxes seem to have many traits both of cats and dogs. They can jump high fences like a cat and swim well like a dog. They mark their territories with their urine and feces like some cats and dogs do and they pounce on their prey like cats do. Like dogs, they are hunters and will hunt even when not hungry. Their sense of hearing is so good that they can hear animals beneath the ground! They also have a keen sense of sight, smell, and are able to communicate with each other with 28 different vocalizations. They are omnivores with diets consisting of mainly grasses, bugs, berries and small animals, rodents, rabbits, and fish, occasionally fruits and vegetables. Since the Red Fox is the size of a small dog, it has its share of predators to be aware of, among them: coyotes, bald eagles, gray wolves, mountain lions, bears and humans. It's their ability to sense danger that assists the fox in evading it. Being nocturnal helps, too.

Red Foxes are native to the northern hemisphere and can be found in wide range. They prefer to live in woodlands, but can adapt to many different environments such as deserts, mountain ranges, grasslands and even suburban areas. Foxes prefer woodlands because of their instinct to den in the winter. They create dens and dwell in them while they breed. They use their tails as a cover as they sleep. Their “kits” are born in the spring season and they begin to sleep in the open again. The Red Fox parents raise their young until the next fall.

Red Foxes are not considered endangered or threatened due to their ability to adapt around human development. They are considered the most wide spread and abundantly populated wild carnivores alive today. In fact, Red Foxes have been domesticated and can be found in the exotic pet trade around the world. Having a domesticated animal versus a wild animal can be an important key factor when considering an exotic pet. Wild animals as pets are only trained to decrease the likelihood of aggression toward humans, but are less likely to actually bond with their keepers. Domesticated Red Foxes have been bred over generations to reduce any genetic remnants of aggression and traits that would prevent a human from successfully keeping them.
