Coatimundis are members of the Procyonidae family which are native to Central and South America, Southern Arizona and Texas. They thrive well in different habitats such as rainforests, rocky and woody places as well as mountainous forests. They usually sleep during the day under a shade and are more active early in the day.

With that in mind, it's much easier to understand the best conditions under which coatis can survive and become comfortable. Thus, it's very important to make the necessary preparations beforehand to ensure that the pet has a home to grow in and food to eat. This should be a place where the Coatimundi can grow healthy and strong. The environment must be conducive.

House Recommendation for a Coatimundi

First and foremost, you must have a well-designed cage which is spacious enough to accommodate the coatimundi and still leave a lot of room for movement. Remember that caging an exotic animal that has had its freedom for a long time can be quite difficult to keep. In that case, you need to think outside the box. Considering its habitat, the best place to place a cage is a spot which is not very far from the house. They are likely to adapt to the habitat much easily.

If you can't construct it yourself, it's advisable to hire an expert. Coatimundis can be aggressive at times, especially when in a new place. The cage should be constructed with mesh wire on top and on the bottom for extra security. Reason being, these animals can easily dig underneath the kennel and make their escape. It's also important to ensure that the door lock is well secured as they can easily open it from the inside if not locked.

Coatimundi's Diet and Health

Coatimundis require a well-balanced diet to stay strong and healthy. These amazing exotic animals are omnivorous since they usually feed on plants and small animals. Learning about their eating habits helps identify the kind of foods they are supposed to eat. Coatimundis are known to eat lizards, bugs, worms, rodents, nuts, birds and their eggs as well as fruits and roots. They also feed on human foods like bananas and eggs.

If these cannot be found around your home, those under one year should be fed with good quality kitten food. If they are old enough, they can be fed with cat or dog food. The basic idea here is to ensure that your pet is getting enough nutrients each day since its vital for growth and development. You should neither overfeed nor underfeed your coati so as to avoid health problems.

Take extra caution when buying un-vaccinated coatis. Just like other pets, they must be vaccinated to prevent spreading of any disease or bacteria they might be carrying. Vaccination and deworming should be carried out when the coatis are about 5 to 6 weeks old. This is something that you cannot afford to overlook for your own safety.

Exercise and Enrichment

To keep your pet in good condition, it's important to ensure that there is enough room for play and exercise. As for enrichment, a hammock made of mesh or a cloth can be perfect for your Coatimundi to relax. They also have plenty of fun in hiding places such as hollow logs or plastic barrels, or a dog kennel. To improve their climbing skills, you can place tree limbs, logs, climbing equipment, swings and branches placed at different height levels offer a great opportunity for enrichment.

Coatimundis also love water and thus a pool of water in their enclosure can really excite them. Clean regularly.

Since these animals love digging, providing them with a layer of soil or other types of substrates can help improve their digging skills. To improve their sense of smell, olfactory enrichment such as unusual odors or scent trails are good enrichment.

What makes Coatimundis unique

Coatimundis are really fun to have around the house. They are very intelligent and curious too. It's easy to play with them since they are less aggressive and possess plenty of desirable traits. They are clean and do not produce offensive body odor. They are playful during the day you can spend quality time with them.

Generally speaking they are safe around children and are great entertainers. Generally having a coatimundi pet will make your home lively with entertainment. It's also advisable to spend a lot of time with your coati so as to strengthen the bond. Normally, coatis demand a lot of attention from their owners. Generally, they love socializing. Creating time to play with them will not hurt at all. This is to ensure that your pet feels comfortable and safe.
